This covers not only the person against whom the offence was committed but also anyone who has suffered directly from the commission of the offence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Victims Charter, every member of the community has a duty to help maintain law and order. This means that they should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>abide by the law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>take proper precautions to prevent crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report crime, corruption or suspicious circumstances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be co-operative with the police or other law enforcement agencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give any assistance they reasonably can at an incident to the police or other law enforcement agencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Come forward as a witness<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Victims Charter also contains 11 \u201crights\u201d of a victim:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to be treated with courtesy and respect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to have a proper response to complaints of crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to information-reporting the crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to information &#8211; investigation and prosecution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to proper facilities at court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to be heard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to seek protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to privacy and confidentiality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to prompt return of property<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to support and after-care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim&#8217;s right to seek compensation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Victims Charter, \u201ca victim is a person who suffers physical or emotional harm, or loss or damage to property because of a criminal offence.
